Registration is open for this year’s (virtual) Maudie’s Moonlight Margarita Run

Time to lace up your racing shoes, ladies and gentlemen.

Registration is open for the Maudie’s Moonlight Margarita Run, which once again will take place virtually this year.

Participants in the 5K can run anytime between now and May 31. A drive-through party where runners can pick up their commemorative T-shirts, plus nibbles and margaritas from Maudie’s TexMex, will take place on June 4.

This year marks the 18th year for the race, which benefits The Trail Foundation, a non-profit organization that works to maintain and improve the popular 10-mile trail around Lady Bird Lake.

After you register, you’ll receive an email link to create a virtual bib that you can share on social media to encourage your friends to get involved.

Then it’s time to get moving. You can walk or run your 5K, using one of the recommended on-trail routes, or any other 5K course you choose. Submit your best time to the website by May 31.

On June 4, join the drive-through packet pickup party to get your commemorative T-shirt, margarita and nibbles from Maudie’s TexMex.

Take this survey to help revamp an exercise station on the Butler Trail

A row of pullup bars, some benches, a drinking fountain and an outdoor shower occupy a patch of ground adjacent to the Butler Trail near Zach Theatre. A puddle often forms around the shower, and the space – well, it just doesn’t look all that inviting.
But The Trail Foundation and the Austin Parks and Recreation Department plan to revamp the fitness area, located on West Riverside Drive, and they’re asking for the public’s help in planning it.
The new exercise station will feature exercise equipment, visual guides to show how to use it, new native plants and shade trees, a limestone seating wall, a new drinking fountain and bike racks, and a concrete ribbon curb to separate the area from the trail.
Two virtual community engagement opportunities are planned. An online survey to pick between two options for exercise equipment is open until Sept. 1.

One option features pushup bars, pullup bars, a bamboo jungle (so cool!), a workout bench and parallel bars. The second features steps, and arm bike, a link-suspension trainer/core twist and magnetic bell, and parallel bars. An online video meeting will be held later this fall to summarize community input and present the chosen equipment design.

Someone is trashing the new one-way signs along the Butler Trail

Not everyone agrees with the new temporary, one-way direction of the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail.

The city of Austin Parks and Recreation Department converted the trail to a clockwise-only route last week, in an effort to minimize face-to-face contact among users.

Simple, right? Not that hard to follow, if you’re going to go against recommendations to steer clear of the trail during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Trail Foundation, the non-profit organization that maintains and enhances the 10-mile loop around Lady Bird Lake, spent $6,000 to make and install more than 300 signs noting the change. At the same time, the foundation has asked people to avoid the trail right now, because it’s difficult to maintain a 6-foot distance from other users at pinch points along the route.

According to Trail Foundation counters, about 85 percent of trail users have heeded the one-way rule, which went into effect last week, but many of the directional signs have been reversed, ripped in half or left by the trash.

Come on, Austin, we’re better than this.

Now, foundation staff members are asking anyone who does use the trail to put back up any downed or misplaced signs. And remember, if you do use the trail, please wear a face covering.

“It’s been a struggle for us because it’s against our grain and mission to discourage people from coming. We love this place and it offers wonderful access to nature, but in this moment, it also presents some hazards,” said Heidi Anderson, CEO of The Trail Foundation.

Come on, Austin. We’re better than this.

The Trail Foundation: Please don’t use the Butler Hike and Bike Trail right now

Technically, the Butler Hike and Bike Trail remains open, but please don’t go there.

That’s the message today from Heidi Anderson, the executive director of The Trail Foundation, the non-profit organization that works to maintain and protect the beloved loop around Lady Bird Lake.

The foundation sent out an email blast recommending that trail users exercise closer to home and “let the trail rest,” noting that it’s impossible to practice social distancing – a spacing of at least 6 feet between humans – on some sections of the trail.

f you do decide to use the trail (and please don’t), the organization recommends warning others of your presence by calling out “on your left” when you pass people, and stepping aside when someone zooms by you. Before and after visiting the trail, wash your hands and use hand sanitizer.

Exercise stations along the trail are closed, and while restrooms and water fountains remain open for now, the public is discouraged from using them.

According to The Trail Foundation, trail usage has not decreased in the last two weeks, and too many users are not practicing social distancing.

Not sure how to maintain your fitness without Austin’s favorite running and walking trail? Go for a walk or run in your neighborhood. Tune into an online workout. (Camp Gladiator is live-streaming free fitness sessions, and Peleton is offering new users a free 90-day subscription to its app, no bike needed.) Go for a bike ride close to home, or get to work yanking weed and trimming overgrown plants in your garden.

Registration opened for Maudie’s Moonlight Margarita Run

Registration is open for the 17th annual Maudie’s Moonlight Margarita Run, and if you’re one of the first 100 to register, you’ll get $10 off your entry fee.

The best part about this 5K race? A margarita and tiny tacos at the finish line party. Plus, you don’t have to get up early. The run takes place in the evening, and finishes with a party under the stars in front of the Seaholm Power Plant.

The run is scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday, June 4. It begins and ends at the Seaholm Power Plant, 800 West Cesar Chavez Street, and the course takes runners alongside Lady Bird Lake. This year, everyone is encouraged to wear neon attire. Register at  thetrailfoundation.org.

Proceeds from the run benefit The Trail Foundation, which works to maintain and enhance the Butler Trail around Lady Bird Lake.
